The signal was coming from the surface and it was in Standard, and it had been repeating for — the ship was careful about this — somewhere between eighty and ninety years.

It was a colony beacon. The format was three revisions out of date, which meant it had been written before the Kestrel launched.

It was broadcasting the Kestrel's own registry number.
